LINO-FIRE series by Richard Hart

LINO-FIRE

January 13, 2022 by Richard Hart

The new Traffic ‘Lino-Fire’ board series by Richard Hart is out now.

“Here are the lino-cut graphics I did for my friends at Traffic. Luke Malaney is a talented woodworker, hence the leaves of trees he likes to use (also an oak leaf cos they are my favourite, and a maple leaf ‘cos it would be rude to have leaves on a skateboard without one). Kevin Coakley likes a good meditation so he gets Buddha under the bodhi tree (this also looks a bit like the PP1 cover, not that Jake is Buddha although at this point, anything is possible). Hiroki Muraoka is one of the best Tokyo street skaters so he gets the most famous bit of Tokyo street- the Shibuya intersection. And then one of the first pro models for James Sayres has that metaphorical journey stretching out before him..”

Books, Pods & Cobblestones

August 03, 2021 by Richard Hart

Fans of British shred-sledding will enjoy the new Statue Hardware video and the harsh spots in Lintell’s latest part. (This photo from PP14 cover.)

Those of you that enjoy watching podcasts (or, probably, listening to them while working), might want to check out the latest two from The 9 Club: longtime videographer Anthony Claravall and even-longer-time NY lynchpin Eli Morgan-Gesner. (The editions with ‘behind the scenes’ guys are generally more interesting, I think.)

Another medium entirely is The Book.; remember those? Two new ones to recommend are ‘The Most Fun Thing’ by Chicago writer Kyle Beachy; a collection of essays about- or somehow relating to- skating; and ‘An Act of Imagination’ by Scott Bourne, a children’s book of poetry illustrated by Todd Bratrud.

That’s it for now, except to mention that if the names Markus Wyndham, Ocean Howell and Colby Carter bring back good memories, you should prob’ly check this out..

A Global Gander

July 23, 2021 by Richard Hart

The new Aussie contingent of the Magenta family was introduced recently in this edit by Antipodean VX wiz Josh Roberts.

Nice to get yr teeth into a full-length vid in these days of ‘The Part’; the Threads guys come through with a typically thoughtful and detailed hour-long (!) new work featuring some lesser-seen US skaters and cities.

Episode 2 of the fun new DZTV video-magazine project hailing from Swedish skate haven Malmö is out.

And what have those Wknd scamps been up to on the US east coast lately? (Nice filming on that downhill line, Grant..)

Assemblage

July 02, 2021 by Richard Hart

Well… what’s new?

I enjoyed seeing a new full-length Boston scene video by Tim Savage: Grace has some tech moves and some cool spots.

The new short Hockey video prob’ly doesn’t need any more hyping from me, but one that may have slipped under your radar is a Mexico edit from the Snack crew. (Photo above of Krebs from the second Push Partial World Tour..)

There’s also part two of Jake Todd’s raw footy edits from the Traffic video; lots of Philly ripper Josh Feist in this one.

Lastly, some more raw footy from a different era entirely- the SMA team’s 1989 US tour with lots of Natas and some rare footage of Stranger, Sheffey and AP. Amazing to see what they are able to achieve with the WORST assemblage of dodgy obstacles imaginable. (A far cry from the perfect skateparks of a US tour nowadays.) Great stuff as far as I’m concerned, but I’m old.

Abair

June 27, 2021 by Richard Hart

It’s always sad when we lose one of our own.

Dave Abair was a raw street skater who put out many video parts in his time.

His infectious energy will be missed. RIP.

Go Skate

June 21, 2021 by Richard Hart

It has come to my attention that today is ‘Go Skateboarding Day’, so, like any other day, I encourage you to do just that. And here’s a couple of recommendations culled from the expanses of the WWW in the last week to watch before/after you do so..

First of all, a video interview that I think should be essential viewing- Karl Watson had a chat with neuroscientist (and skater) Andrew Huberman who is full of interesting, useful and reassuring information.

As far as watching people ride skateboards, the best thing you could do right now is check out Chris Athans’ part for Loophole.. Excellent stuff.

There’s also a nice little edit of Philly VX man Jake Todd’s raw footy from the last Traffic video, including the beast of a grind pictured above (from PP16)..

I can’t Go Skateboarding (to-)Day; it’s Go to the Playground with the Baby Day for me.. but that actually shares a lot of similarities with GSD…

Have fun.

New & Old

June 15, 2021 by Richard Hart

New: Excellent (as ever) video part from Brad Cromer. (Photo above from PP2 cover diptych.)

Also, PP pal Jameel Douglas’ silky smooth part from the Loophole vid is online; full DVDs available now.

Old: Meanwhile, Josh Stewart has been delving into the Static archives again- pretty epic tape, this one..

Lastly, utilizing old technology for new ends; a couple of excellent FILM projects. Matt Payne made a nice 16mm short of Tom Karangelov; and Colin Read (mastermind behind the wonderful Spirit Quest) made a somewhat mind-boggling ad for Cons involving a circle of pin-hole cameras with one roll of film running between them all.. and.. uh, well, just watch it and try to figure it out..

Re: Your Gran

June 08, 2021 by Richard Hart

You’ve prob’ly watched enough skateboard videos lately- how about reading some interviews..?

There’s a cool little series on Free exploring different Europeans’ experiences ‘making it’ in California, back when you had to go there to do so. Includes Benny Fairfax (above; this photo first published in PP18).

There’s another interesting interview from the only skateboarder that your Gran has heard of..

The trailer for the forthcoming NY doc ‘All the Streets Are Silent’ is online. Looks great.

..And then there’s this beautiful display of flying..

Covers, Baby..

May 16, 2021 by Richard Hart

This photo of Ben Gore was the cover of PP11. Look Back Library made a little video with Ben discussing this and his other cover for Transworld.

LBL are doing good stuff for the appreciation and preservation of skateboard magazines- if you have mags to donate, contact them and they'll add them to the many skate libraries they've set up. (If print is indeed dead, think of them as nice graveyards.)

Updatery

April 08, 2021 by Richard Hart

It’s been a while; I know. So, to recap:

This photo is from PP1 which sold out long ago, but I recently unearthed a few copies of PP11, 13 and 17 which were all previously sold out. So if you want any of those, get on that SHOP tab above.. (Note: PP13 is the ‘No Skateboarding Issue’, and a rarer one as the 400 copies headed to the US mysteriously disappeared.)

Check out Taylor and the rest of the Picture Show crew in their new promo.

You’ve prob’ly seen the new Quasi video but have you seen the latest raw Rios Crew edit from Budapest starring PP pal Ricsi?

(Also: this…)

Talk Talk

March 01, 2021 by Richard Hart

The four interviews from PP17 are now up on here.

There have been a couple of other interesting interviews lately, too. There’s one with UK filmer Dan Magee (Blueprint, ‘Cover Version’ etc.) on the Vague site, and one with Don Brown (ex-pro freestyler and driving force behind the Etnies/Emerica/Es family of brands) on the Slam site.

INTERVIEWS

January 19, 2021 by Richard Hart

Up at the top o’ the page there, you’ll see a new ‘INTERVIEWS’ tab.

PP17, the Interview Issue, is now sold out; but for those of you who didn’t get a copy or who can’t read English (and are reading this translated by a helpful algorithm), you can now read the four interviews on the loose theme of creativity in skateboarding.

First up is Soy Panday, the other three to follow soon.
